Frequently Asked Questions
How do I Scallop?
If you have never scalloped before DON’T WORRY! We are here to walk you through the entire experience. We take you out to an area in the gulf we call “The Scallop Grounds”. This is an area that is usually going to be anywhere from 3 – 8 feet of depth, with beautiful clear water, and a nice grassy bottom. This is where the fun begins and we get to scalloping! Everyone is provided with a mask & snorkel, fins, and a bag to keep your scallops in of course. Once in the water this essentially becomes an underwater easter egg hunt, and as we snorkel along the surface we look into the grass beds for scallops. Once you do see a scallop, you dive down, grab ‘em, and put them in your scallop bag and repeat!
When Should I Come?
Scallop season in Crystal River runs from July 1 – September 24. Less than 3 months of the year available to book this unforgettable trip!
We recommend booking as soon as you can and the earlier in the season the better.
Can we keep the scallops?
Yes! The limit regarding scallops in Crystal River is up to 2 gallons per person/per day. Or up to 10 gallons per vessel.
Our commercial license covers all tour guests fishing licenses so there are no extra costs for you. So bring friends and family to reach your limit! (6 Passengers Maximum)
Do I Need My Own Gear?
Of course not. Our goal is to make this the easiest experience that anyone can enjoy. We provide all Masks, Snorkels, Fins, and Scallop bags. All of which are professionally sterilized with each use. That being said if you have your own gear and would prefer to use it you are more than welcome to.
What Is An In-Water Guide For?
On each and every one of our scallop trips we include an in-water guide at no additional charge to your booking.Your in-water guide is there for so many reasons all of which are to make your trip more special. They will be taking photos throughout the trip, in and out of the water, that we send your way after the tour. They are also there to help teach new snorkelers and new scallopers how to do the activity. In terms of what to look for, how to dive down, tips and tricks for how to find scallops and where are the best places to look. And just as much as that guide is there to help everyone get the hang of it and to help capture the wonderful memories along the way through photos. You’ll also realize that your guide is probably your most experienced scalloper and can therefore help you fill your limit. Which means even more yummy scallops to take home with you at the end!
Can Kids Do This Activity?
ABSOLUTELY! Although there is a certain level of swimming recommended. We will be on our scallop grounds which are just a few miles out into the gulf. Usually we are in fairly shallow and calm water, however it’s not always possible to stand up and the scallops we are searching for are usually going to be on the ground hiding in the seagrass. So you do want everyone to have the ability to swim.
However, if there are littles ones you want to bring along and are concerned about, we can always have them stay on the boat with a guardian or we can have them stay in a life jacket while in the water. If you have any concerns at all about kids coming along please feel free to reach out to us with any questions or concerns!
